Selecting the Right Catalytic Converter: EPA vs. CARB
Converter compliance is determined by where the vehicle is registered and its original emissions certification level. Follow this quick reference to ensure legal, hassle-free installation.
46-State Coverage
Where It Applies: Vehicles registered in 46 states (excluding CA, CO, NY, ME).
- For Federal/EPA-certified vehicles registered outside CARB-regulated states.
- Cannot be sold or installed on vehicles registered in CA, CO, NY, or ME.
- Verify Federal/EPA certification on the under-hood VECI (Vehicle Emission Control Information) tag.
4-State Mandatory Rules (CA, CO, NY, ME)
Where It Applies: Mandatory for vehicles registered in California, Colorado, New York, and Maine.
- Must be installed on all CA-certified vehicles registered in these 4 states.
- Must match the Engine Family / Test Group Number from the under-hood VECI tag.
- Features high-load substrate with stamped Executive Order (EO) numbers.
